Detroit Swindle.
We had these guys back in September 2017 and they smashed it! Since then they've had residencies throughout 2018 at clubs Like Berlin’s Prince Charles and Phonox in London, their sophomore album “High Life” coming out this month and this show is part of the world tour that's being planned to support it so its great we've got them to come and spread some sunshine at Hope Works for this special year for them.
The Dutch duo put out most of their music through their own label Heist Recordings and have quickly gained popularity through their early releases like “The Wrap around”, and “The Break up”. Their more recent output sees them explore the broader corners of electronic music with the dreamy “Tamarindus Hollandicus”, and the sample-heavy “Just not Norma”. They’ve collaborated with and done remixes for artists like Tom Misch, Kerri Chandler, Mayer Hawthorne, Mark de Clive-Lowe, Hercules & Love Affair and Seven Davis Jr.
As avid record collectors of both old and new music, their DJ style is as varied as their taste in music. Rather not limiting themselves to a certain sound, Detroit Swindle will play just about anything. So whether it’s classic house, obscure disco, African funk or any other genre from across the globe: if it puts a smile on your face, they’ll play it.
They run their house-focused label Heist Recordings since 2013. Heist has featured music from artists such as Frits Wentink, Pépé Bradock, Nachtbraker, Matthew Herbert, Ge-Ology, Byron the Aquarius, Adryiano, Alma Negra, Nebraska, Max Graef, Fouk and many more.
They carefully curate the label’s output as well as it’s look & feel, working closely with visual artist Bas Koopmans to match their personal aesthetics. The label is not only a showcase of their particular sonic view, it’s also a meeting place for likeminded artists. Their artists are brought together by the duo with label showcases and special projects such as the yearly Roundup EP; a tradition where every artist of that year remixes another artist, effectuated by the luck of the draw.
We welcome them back to hope works!
Octo Octa ( Live )
It shouldn't be surprising that Brooklyn-based producer Octo Octa (née Maya Bouldry-Morrison) had already logged tireless years as a fringe IDM artist and sound designer before her debut EP Let Me See You lasso'd a mighty wave of international house-heads to the dance-floor and helped push underground house label 100% Silk onto everyone's radar in 2011. Seven records later, which include a misty deep-house slow-burner in the Where Did You Go/Through The Haze 12" for Chicago-based, Smartbar DJ Steve Mizek's Argot imprint and the soaringly luxurious More Times EP for German powerhouse Running Back, Bouldry-Morrison's finely-tuned marriage of exquisite compositional flare, meticulously-sculpted sonics, and primal dance-floor functionality has earned her a a Red Bull Music Academy residency in Manhattan, which found the producer working closely with Harald Bjork and Throwing Snow, as well as tours across the world that included coveted gigs at Berlin's Panorama Bar, Frankfurt's Live At Robert Johnson, and Barcelona's Sonar Festival.
Last year was a breakthrough year for her and her album was hugely well received pretty much everywhere...for VERY good reason. It's fantastic…
We are thrilled to bring Octo Octa to Hope Works for her Sheffield debut, and not just that, she's performing LIVE. What an absolute treat this will be. Her warm radiance will be the perfect way to enjoy a summer Saturday party at Hope Works...check this out!
Martyn ( Live )
The man himself! The LEGEND that is Martyn is back and he's got the most wonderful new album to play for us. He'll be playing Live and what a treat you're all in for. We know, we've heard it...its amazing...what can we say....this night is going to be one to remember for a long time.
She's the nuts. Trust us.
Lo Shea, Chris Duckenfield and we'll be announcing some more local talent over the next week!
Its going to be a Summer party to remember this one. Get involved:)
