The Fourth Trimester (4T) is an informal drop in session run by Dr Rosie Knowles (Sheffield Sling Surgery and Library) and Lindsay Snow (Understanding Kids/BabyCalm), to help parents/carers with bumps or small babies (up to around 20 weeks) find out all they need to know about this precious «4th Trimester» stage in their lives. Based at The Snug in the city centre, all caregivers are welcome.

Split into two parts, the first hour (10-11am) is for evidence-based parenting support and the chance to meet other new parents. We often discuss sleeping and feeding issues, what is «normal» for babies, and encourage parents/carers to trust their instincts. We do our best to provide the community that is so often lacking for new parents. There is often an infant feeding peer supporter or lactation consultant on hand.

From 11am onwards, the focus shifts more to sling demos and try-ons, with weighted demo dolls and then your own baby, as well as the chance to try other carriers if you are already using a sling. Slings can be hired to take home/purchased on the day with discount from Sling Spot.

Older siblings will be welcome from 11.30 to protect the tiny babies in the first half!

At the Sling Surgery we know that babies do not feed at predictable times. If your baby wants feeding while you are visiting, you're welcome to make yourself comfortable wherever you like to meet your baby's needs. The volunteers will be happy to help you find somewhere to sit or provide you with hot water to warm bottles.

Babies are particularly vulnerable for the first three months of life outside the womb while their bodies and brains adapt to their new environment. This total, almost pregnancy-like, level of dependence is the inspiration for the term '4th trimester'. Scientific research is discovering that successfully meeting a baby's needs has a positive and measurable effect on brain development (of the parents as well as the baby!). Furthermore, we believe that having the knowledge, skills and confidence to parent in an instinctive and responsive way results in a more enjoyable and relaxed transition to family life.
